Anti-obesity Effects of <i>Triphala</i> at Biochemical and Molecular Level in High-Fat Diet-induced Obese Rats

Background The prevalence of obesity is rising worldwide. Due to the side effects associated with modern drugs, there a need for an alternative treatment management. Triphala (TP), polyherbal formulation from Ayurveda, used by Ayurvedic physicians weight loss. Purpose This study was designed evaluate TP on at biochemical, histological, and molecular levels. Materials Methods Male Wistar rats (125–150 g, 6–7 weeks old) were fed high-fat diet (HFD) total 48 days. From day 24 48, along HFD, given aqueous extract (50, 100, 200 mg/kg/day) or atorvastatin (1.2 mg/kg/day). Biochemical parameters estimated in serum. Histopathology done liver adipose tissue. Monoamine levels brain Results At end (day 48), compared only HFD receiving group (DC), all TP-treated groups showed significant decrease body weight, serum glucose, cholesterol, triglycerides, leptin, interleukin-6, C-reactive protein, malondialdehyde, noradrenaline High-density lipoprotein, adiponectin, superoxide dismutase, serotonin, dopamine found be increased DC rats. Additionally, reduction adipocyte size restored monoamine Conclusion had shown anti-obesity effect as demonstrated lowering inflammation oxidative stress, size, modulation expression metabolism.
